For Omar Sabori Santos, the journey to graduation was not measured in miles alone. It was measured in the obstacles he overcame to get there.<\/p>\n

Raised in a small city in northern Mexico, Omar entered ASU Preparatory Academy Phoenix<\/a> facing a significant language barrier. Today, he is not just a high school graduate. He is a college-ready scholar with two years of university credit already completed through Arizona State University.<\/p>\n

As part of the cohort that helped ASU Prep Phoenix become Arizona\u2019s only 2025 ACT School of Excellence<\/a>, Omar\u2019s story is a testament to the power of persistence, college-prep opportunities and the specialized support of the Sun Devil stepped onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/asuprep.asu.edu\/phoenix-high-school\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASU Preparatory Academy Phoenix<\/a> campus as a freshman, the idea of graduating with a college degree seemed like a distant, perhaps impossible, goal.<\/p>\n<p>This year, that \u201cimpossible\u201d goal becomes reality.<\/p>\n<p>Aaliyah is one of almost two dozen seniors at ASU Prep Phoenix graduating with both her high school diploma and her Associate of Arts (AA) degree from Arizona State University. Her journey highlights how college prep programs, college credit opportunities and college-level coursework can help high school students accelerate their path toward higher education and future careers.<\/p>\n<p>This achievement follows the school\u2019s recent national recognition as <a href=\"https:\/\/asuprep.asu.edu\/news\/asu-prep-phoenix-among-the-nations-best-for-college-access-with-acts-school-of-excellence-designation\/\" target=\"_blank\">ACT\u2019s 2025 School of Excellence<\/a>. ASU Prep Phoenix is the only school in Arizona and one of only 26 schools nationwide to receive the honor.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Aaliyah talks about the grit required to balance two worlds, managing high school responsibilities alongside rigorous college classes, and how a single project management course changed her career trajectory (AA) degrees from Arizona State At <a href=\"https:\/\/asuprep.asu.edu\/poly-stem-elementary\/\" target=\"_blank\">ASU Prep Polytechnic STEM Academy<\/a>, that teacher is Danielle Houseman.<\/p>\n<p>As the K\u20136 STEM lead, Houseman has spent the last nine months transforming her classroom into a mission control center. Polytechnic STEM Academy<\/a> are ready for their final destination: a live conversation with outer space.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, April 23, the Mesa-based school will host a once-in-a-lifetime assembly where students will establish a direct radio link with the International Space Station (ISS). The event is the culmination of a year-long STEM initiative led by teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/asuprep.asu.edu\/news\/utopia-of-teaching-meet-the-stem-educator-bringing-the-international-space-station-to-mesa\" target=\"_blank\">Danielle Houseman<\/a>, which has seen students exploring the galaxy through telescopes and virtual missions to the Kennedy Space From professional mascots to local government dignitaries, the community came together to show our students that reading is the ultimate superpower!<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">A Major League Visit from Baxter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px\">\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The celebration reached a fever pitch when Baxter the Bobcat, the beloved mascot of the Arizona Diamondbacks, made a surprise appearance!\u00a0In partnership with Avnet, Baxter joined our second-grade classrooms to share some of his favorite stories (note: Cat in the Hat).<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">It wasn’t just ab<span style=\"font-size: inherit\">out the reading, though\u2014thanks to the generosity of Avnet, every student walked away with a brand-new book to add to their home library.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: inherit\">The morning concluded with high-fives and class photos, leaving our young scholars inspired to keep turning pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\"><b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Community Leaders Lead the Way<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">In addition to Baxter, ASU Prep Phoenix was honored to host a diverse group of local leaders, business professionals and educators who stepped into our classrooms across all grade levels.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">These mentors brought their favorite books and shared personal stories about how literacy has shaped their careers and lives. By engaging in interactive reading activities, our guests helped reinforce a vital message: literacy is the foundation of everything we do!<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Why We Celebrate Read Across America<\/b><\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Established by the National Education Association to coincide with Dr. Seuss\u2019s birthday, Read Across America is more than just a day on the calendar. It is a nationwide movement to foster a lifelong love for reading, improve literacy rates, and highlight the critical importance of education in a child\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"14\">At ASU Prep, we are committed to building a community of readers. We want to extend a huge “thank you” to the Arizona Diamondbacks, Avnet and all the volunteers who helped make this week so impactful for our students.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='fp-gallery All different grades were invited to attend the presentations. Our elementary school team students showcased their cultures and traditions through cultural heritage presentations. Traditional foods, clothing and even personal pictures were shared with everyone who attended.<\/p>\n<p>Grades 6-8 showcased their future career interests.
