Finding purpose through early college and internships: Meet Jackson Xum Mendoza
College classes, internships and real-world work experience helped Jackson Xum Mendoza turn an interest in justice into a plan for the future.
Through opportunities available at ASU Prep South Phoenix 7-12, Jackson is exploring a career in law, building professional skills and gaining firsthand insight into the legal field.
Finding a path in law
Jackson’s decision to take college courses while still in high school was initially driven by a desire to prove himself to others. As time went on, friends helped Jackson realize that the journey should be about personal growth and pursuing meaningful goals.
“And because of my dream of fighting for justice,” Jackson added.
That interest in justice developed into a clearer goal of becoming an immigration lawyer, with a focus on helping individuals and families navigate the citizenship process and stay together.
One of Jackson’s favorite college courses has been Criminology, which helped strengthen that interest and provided a deeper understanding of the legal system.
Balancing high school and college coursework has also required persistence and discipline, reinforcing the commitment needed to pursue a future in law.
Criminology showed me what type of justice I was fighting for and what I need to learn before going into law. It taught me that no matter what comes across my path, I must stay determined and never give up.”
Real-world experience
Through the ElevateEdAZ internship program, Jackson has gained firsthand experience at a law firm specializing in motor vehicle accident cases.
Responsibilities have included organizing files, entering case information, observing court proceedings and learning how legal teams support clients throughout the legal process.
One lesson stood out more than expected: the importance of teamwork.
“No matter what department they’re in, everyone works together with great coordination and chemistry to complete cases with proficiency,” Jackson explained.
The experience reinforced Jackson’s interest in law while providing a realistic look at the profession.
“It made me more determined in continuing my path with law, and showed me that I could start up my own law firm with enough time and dedication. I want to give other people who want to get into law a chance at getting an internship with my future law firm,” he shared.
From forensics to future attorney
Before participating in the internship, Jackson had considered a career in forensic science.
After touring an FBI facility and shadowing an FBI agent, a clearer understanding of the profession emerged, helping Jackson realize it was not the right direction for him.
The law firm internship ultimately provided a more focused look at day-to-day legal work and helped clarify where Jackson’s strengths and interests aligned.
For students considering college coursework or internships, Jackson’s advice is simple: go for it.
“They can help you figure out what you truly want to do,” Jackson said, noting that trying different experiences can help students understand whether a field is the right direction for them.
Take opportunities no matter what because sometimes there are internships that may catch their interest and it can lead that person into finding out what they truly wanna do, even if they are unsure.”
Learning what's possible
For Jackson, one of the most rewarding aspects of participating in both college coursework and an internship has been discovering just how much can be accomplished with determination, support and access to opportunities.
Today, the goal is clear: attend a university after graduation, continue studying law and work toward becoming an attorney. Long-term aspirations include opening a law firm dedicated to helping others while creating internship opportunities for future students interested in the legal profession.
Building connections and confidence
Reflecting on the journey so far, Jackson believes one of the greatest benefits of ASU Prep South Phoenix has been the opportunity to grow both academically and personally.
Beyond earning college credits and gaining professional experience, the school has provided a supportive environment where meaningful friendships, mentorship and personal growth have flourished.
“The feeling of being able to do these courses with my friends makes me feel like I can do anything with them by my side,” he shared.
