Arizona PBS recently spotlighted <\/span>ASU Prep Tempe powered by the Levitt Lab<\/span><\/a> and its innovative approach to high school education.<\/span><\/p>\n

Megan Hanley, Executive Director of School Design at <\/span>ASU Prep<\/span><\/a> and Maxwell Smith, Founding Leader, discussed the groundbreaking hybrid high school program for grades 9\u201312.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hanley shared, \u201cWe\u2019re really reimagining what school and education can look like\u2026 helping students take ownership over their learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Smith added, \u201cIt\u2019s preparing our leaders for the future\u2026 using education as an engine for following their dreams.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Launching Fall 2025, the program blends digital and in-person learning with a seminar-style curriculum, empowering students to explore topics like current events, global issues and future trends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leader. With extensive experience in education and a passion for reimagining traditional models, Smith is uniquely equipped to lead The Levitt Lab into its inaugural year and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rooted in reimagining education<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith\u2019s journey in education began as a Teach For America Corps Member in Metro Atlanta, where he taught social studies, economics and AP U.S. Politics & Government. Even then, he blended traditional learning with creative approaches to engage students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The limitations of the traditional education system became a defining motivator in his career. \u201cThis system, born out of the era of standardization and industrialization, hasn\u2019t truly evolved,\u201d Smith explained. \u201cIt\u2019s to the detriment of our students.\u201d This realization led him to pursue a Master\u2019s degree in School Leadership, with a focus on innovative school models, at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armed with this expertise, Smith returned to support a school redesign centered on arts-based learning before eventually leading the Forest School Online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megan Hanley, Executive Director of School Design at ASU Preparatory Academy, shared why Smith is the perfect fit to lead The Levitt Lab, explaining, \u201cWe were looking for a dynamic leader who not only had experience in school redesign, but also someone who had worked in a mastery-based system. Max\u2019s skills and background complemented both of these things from his work in turnaround schools, starting the Forest School Online and with his most recent work in a mastery-based post-secondary model.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanley also emphasized an especially apropos connection, noting, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMax is a long-time follower of Steve Levitt, founder of The Levitt Lab, and even used his book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freakonomics,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to teach his high school economics course. He not only understood the vision, but has adopted the vision. My job is to embody the learning methods The Levitt Lab is built on and share that vision both within the school community and externally, so the impact of this reimagined model of education can spread system-wide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith has clear goals for The Levitt Lab, starting with a strong launch this fall. \u201cThe immediate priority is welcoming our inaugural class of 9th to 12th graders,\u201d he said. \u201cLong term, I see systemic impact. I want to use data to generate insights that other schools and districts can replicate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI see this new model creating waves in the labor force, in people\u2019s quality of life and in their communities,\u201d he said. \u201cWith an alumni network that stays connected, we\u2019ll see how these changes play out nationwide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what excites him most, Smith\u2019s enthusiasm was evident. \u201cEverything! But if I had to pick one thing, it has to be meeting the students and families,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>About The Levitt Lab<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its core, The Levitt Lab is about creating an educational environment that prioritizes curiosity, personalized mastery-based learning and real-world readiness.
