A stellar opportunity for ASU Prep Polytechnic students

Danielle Houseman on The Morning Show

At ASU Prep Polytechnic Elementary, students are reaching for the stars—literally. Danielle Houseman, STEM Specialist at the academy, recently shared insights on The Morning Show about an exciting initiative that brings space exploration into the classroom.

Through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program, ASU Prep Polytechnic is offering K–6 students a unique opportunity to engage with astronauts aboard theInternational Space Station (ISS). This spring, 10 students will be selected to ask live questions during a real-time radio contact, thanks to collaborations with the Superstition Amateur Radio Club.

Our year in orbit: A year-long exploration

The journey began with the “Our Year in Orbit” campaign, a comprehensive space-themed curriculum designed to inspire and educate. The program includes:

  • Space-Themed Curriculum: Lessons integrating space science across various subjects.
  • Family Nights: Engaging events that bring families together to explore space topics.
  • Guest Speakers: Experts from ASU, Virgin Galactic and Spaceport America sharing their knowledge and experiences.

Houseman emphasized that this initiative not only fosters a love for science but also builds a sense of community and excitement around space exploration.

Building connections beyond the classroom

Beyond the classroom, the program connects students with professionals in the aerospace industry, providing real-world insights into careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). These experiences aim to inspire the next generation of innovators and explorers.

Right now, our fourth- through sixth-grade students are researching and building models of satellites, working together and focusing on collaboration throughout the process.”

—Danielle Houseman, STEM Specialist at ASU Prep Poly

Danielle says her proudest moment in the classroom came when she learned her students would have this rare opportunity to speak live with astronauts aboard the International Space Station. For Houseman, it was a career-defining moment because it opened doors for her students, sparked excitement in their learning and launched their imaginations into the stratosphere.
