ASU Preparatory Academy

ASU Preparatory Academies are a network of charter schools sponsored by Arizona State University to design new models of educational success that improves student achievement for all learners.

As our state regulator, ASU measures our performance and outcomes and holds us accountable to our mission.

George Dean

Chair Person

George Dean has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Phoenix Urban League since mid 1992. He is a former CEO of the Sacramento, California and Omaha, Nebraska affiliates, and has served more than 25 years as an Urban League staff member. In February of 2013, he was appointed Western Regional Vice President of the NUL Association of Executives (AOE). Honors: Mr. Dean was presented with an Honorary Law Degree from Arizona Summit Law School in May 2013 and the Victoria Foundation established the George H. Dean Scholarship for undergraduates and graduates within the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona in December 2014.Mr. Dean holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Arizona State University and Graduate Studies in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University.

Vice Chairperson and Secretary

Mr. José Cárdenas is a 1977 Stanford University Law School graduate, he was a partner in the law firm of Lewis and Roca before joining Arizona State University in 2009. He also served as the firm’s managing partner and later as its chairman. Mr. Cárdenas served ASU as Sr. Vice President and General Counsel until July of 2022 when he assumed his new position as Senor University Advisor. He is also Special Counsel to the ASU Office of General Counsel.

Amy has been exploring education innovation and personalized learning for more than ten years with her efforts in school design, marketing strategy and educational policy. She is dedicated to educational reform and instructional choice for all students. She is also a fan of all things soccer and chasing her children and chickens around her yard.

Julie has been celebrated as an education disruptor for nearly three decades. She was the founding CEO and president of Florida Virtual School, the world’s first state-wide virtual school and one of the nation’s largest K-12 online education provider. When not leading international school programs, you’ll find her at the nearest beach with several golden retrievers.

Katie Ratlief has been involved in shaping public policy in Arizona for over a decade. She currently serves as Executive Director for the Common Sense Institute Arizona, a non-partisan, free market research organization. Previously, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Senior Advisor, and Director of Legislative Affairs to an Arizona governor. Katie lives in Phoenix with her husband Casey and dog Betsy.

In addition to our governance model, we hope you also explore our rich network of options for teaching and learning. These models empower students to explore the world around them, enable problem solving in and for their own communities, and teach them to apply knowledge to bring students success in all aspects of their life.

Governance Board Meeting Notices

Board of Directors Meeting – ASU Preparatory Academy’s Board of Directors generally holds a regular meeting once per month. Pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.01 and A.R.S §38-431.02, notice is hereby given to the general public that the Board of Directors of ASU Preparatory Academy, will hold Regular Sessions on the following dates during the 2024-2025 school year:

Each Regular Session will begin at 9:00 a.m. AZ, unless otherwise noted above. The Board of Directors meets virtually, and the public may attend via Zoom https://asu.zoom.us/j/84031417702 or telephone by dialing into +1 602 753 0140 Meeting ID: 8403 1417 702.

Those who are unable to participate virtually are invited to ASU Preparatory Academy’s District Office located at 1130 E University Dr. STE 230, Tempe, AZ 85281. Copies of the agenda and supporting materials will be available 24 hours prior to the meeting online at https://asuprep.asu.edu/governance/ or you may review the agenda in person at the District Office. The Board reserves the right to change the order of items on the agenda, with exception of public hearings. One or more members of the Board may participate in the meeting by telephonic communications. Pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.02(H) the Board will not discuss, consider, or decide those matters not listed on the agenda. Pursuant to A.R.S. 38-431.03 (A)(3), the Board may vote to go into Executive Session, which will not be open to the public, to consult with its attorney and obtain legal advice on any matter listed on the agenda.
