Unlocking bilingual success at ASU Prep Phoenix with the Dual Language Immersion Program

Choosing the right education for your child is one of the most important decisions a family can make. At ASU Preparatory Academy Phoenix, we understand the importance of preparing students to thrive academically, culturally and socially.

One way we’re achieving this is through our innovative Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program, which offers students a unique opportunity to become bilingual, biliterate and globally competitive.

Dual Language Immersion: a unique opportunity

At ASU Prep Phoenix, the DLI program is thoughtfully designed to provide students with meaningful, high-impact learning opportunities. The program follows a 50/50 model, where students receive instruction in both English and Spanish, transitioning between languages at midday. This “roller coaster model” ensures continuous exposure to both languages across core subjects.

Nichole Perez, Assistant Principal at ASU Prep Phoenix, emphasizes how the program goes beyond basic language acquisition. “Students don’t just learn two languages,” she shares. “They develop critical thinking and academic skills that prepare them for a globally connected future.”

Here’s what sets our dual language program apart:

  • Innovative bilingual instruction
The program combines challenging academic content with targeted language development, enabling students to achieve fluency in both languages while excelling in grade-level subjects.
  • College & career readiness
Bilingual proficiency gives students a distinct advantage, equipping them with the skills needed to excel in higher education and thrive in an increasingly global workforce.
  • Research-based language acquisition
ASU Prep utilizes proven dual language strategies to ensure students build strong literacy and academic skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Technology-enhanced learning
By integrating cutting-edge digital tools and personalized learning platforms, the program boosts student engagement and accelerates language mastery.

Transformative benefits & meaningful impact

The DLI program at ASU Prep Phoenix offers much more than bilingual proficiency; it’s a comprehensive approach to fostering academic, social and cognitive excellence.

Here’s how this unique program makes a difference:

  • Academic achievement
The DLI program prioritizes student success by combining linguistic development with academic rigor. Through a proven dual language program model, students, whether emergent bilinguals or English learners, build strong literacy and academic skills in both English and Spanish. Celebrating multilingualism, the program helps all students thrive.
  • Cognitive and social benefits
Research consistently highlights the cognitive perks of bilingual education and elementary school is the ideal time to set a strong foundation for lifelong success. Learning two languages enhances critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, improves memory and sharpens focus. Socially, students build multicultural competence as they interact with peers from different backgrounds, fostering mutual respect and understanding.
  • Preparation for college and careers
The benefits of the DLI program extend well beyond the classroom. By integrating language development with rigorous academic content, students gain skills that prepare them for college and an increasingly interconnected global workforce. Bilingualism is a highly sought-after asset in many industries, giving students a competitive edge in their academic and career pursuits.“Bilingual proficiency isn’t just a skill, it’s an opportunity,” Perez shares. “This program is more than just education; it’s about empowering students with opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. Seeing students gain confidence in two languages, connect with different cultures and open doors to future careers makes this program truly special.”
  • Program growth and accessibility
Starting in Kindergarten, the DLI program currently serves students through 3rd grade, with plans to expand into the 4th grade in the 2025-26 school year and 5th grade in 2026-27. This planned growth reflects ASU Prep’s broader strategic plan to enhance educational opportunities and make bilingual, grade-level programs available to more families. This development ultimately supports students in earning the Arizona Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma, highlighting their bilingual proficiency and academic dedication.

It takes a village

At ASU Prep Phoenix, we know it takes community partnerships to help students thrive and that’s why we’re all about supporting our teachers and families every step of the way.

Our teachers are backed with top-notch training, ready-to-go instructional materials and plenty of opportunities to team up with their peers. From learning the best bilingual teaching tips to collaborating in small groups, they’ve got the tools to make dual language learning shine.

But here’s where it gets even better—we don’t stop with the classroom. Our teachers share their know-how with families through workshops, bilingual newsletters and easy-to-use resources. This way, parents stay in the loop and feel confident cheering their kids on as they grow in both English and Spanish. Together, we’re creating a welcoming community where every child is set up for success.

Furthermore, ASU Prep Phoenix fosters community engagement education programs by encouraging collaboration between staff, families and the broader school community. These partnerships ensure students receive the support they need to thrive in every setting.
