High school students in the Sun Devil Sports Analytics Scholars program experience exactly that.
The program at ASU Preparatory Academy redefines how students view data science by immersing them in the electrifying world of sports analytics. Yes, they may be learning the fundamentals of data visualization, Python, regression models and machine learning—but through the lens of professional sports!
What makes this program a game-changer? It’s the incredible opportunities and mentors. Students collaborate with the Arizona Diamondbacks and learn directly from stars like Daniel McIntosh, a teaching professor at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business; Javier Melendez, a dynamic physics and math teacher at ASU Prep Phoenix; and Don Gibson, the visionary director of the program from ASU’s Selig Sports Law and Business program. Together, they guide learners through projects that bridge the gap between academics and professional sports.
Students tackle challenges like improving team performance, analyzing player stats and creating marketing strategies aimed at younger fans. They even designed surveys for the Diamondbacks and got behind-the-scenes access at Chase Field to see how a major league team operates, from fan engagement to food vendors. It’s learning, but amplified by the thrill of the sports industry.
More than just numbers, this program empowers students, particularly those from underserved communities, to see their futures in roles like data scientists, statisticians and sports managers. Who knows, these students might live out their very own “Moneyball” moment while applying lessons in big data to team averages, player performance and social media trends.
